As the largest city in Texas, Houston spreads out along Galveston Bay, near the state’s southeast Gulf shore. Houston’s Johnson Space Center was the base from which man’s first walk on the Moon was managed, and this NASA facility alone has attracted residents from more than 100 countries, speaking dozens of languages. Houston sports fever runs all year long with the NFL Houston Texans, Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros, the NBA’s Houston Rockets, and AHL’s Houston Aeros. White sand beaches, penguins and a discovery pyramid await at Moody Gardens on Galveston Island. Big Oil prosperity is reflected in cultural offerings such as the Houston Museum District, with 16 institutions all within walking distance. From Broadway to ballet, opera and symphony, Houston’s Theater District, altogether some 13,000 seats strong, serves as a magnet, with the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts featuring Theatre Under the Stars, Houston and Uniquely Houston. The pedestrian friendly Downtown Entertainment District -- besides fish, Downtown Aquarium has a Ferris wheel, boardwalk, dancing fountains and themed restaurants -- attracts throngs with more than 70 bars, clubs, lounges, restaurants, and hotels. In fact, Greater Houston has more than 55,000 hotel rooms and 5,000-plus restaurants, from Tex-Mex to sushi or seafood.
